About the Chesapeake

LIGHTSHIP CHESAPEAKE (LV-416, WAL-538) CHESAPEAKE

Built in 1930 by Charleston Drydock & Machine Company, the ship stood at 30 feet tall and 113 feet long. In her prime, she housed 16 crew members: 5 officers, 10 seamen, and 1 cook. The Chesapeake (originally christened Lightship 116) was built to serve the U.S. Lighthouse Service as a floating lighthouse and communications platform.

When the Lighthouse Service was absorbed by the U.S. Coast Guard, she was stationed off the coast of Virginia, at the entrance to Chesapeake Bay (for which she was then named).

When the United States entered WWII, The Chesapeake was drafted along with thousands of American men from the ages 21-45. She was given a light armament, painted “battleship gray,” and moved to Sandwich, Massachusetts to serve as an Examination Vessel. Her service continued after the war and she returned to Chesapeake Station. She ended her service in 1970 and retired in Delaware Bay before she was transferred to the National Park Service where she began a new career as a seagoing environmental center in Washington, DC.
In 1981, The Chesapeake joined the Baltimore Maritime Museum’s collection of historic ships. She is now a National Historic Landmark which tourists can visit. The LV116 Chesapeake is located at Pier 3 alongside the USS Torsk and the National Aquarium east of the Inner Harbor.
